Health Law: A primer for family caregivers in the mental health and addictions sector

About this event

Part 1: In this session, we will examine how the Health Care Consent Act and Personal Health Information Protection Act, 2004 affect an individual’s rights, the roles and obligations of substitute decision-makers, and practical strategies for navigating the health system. It will also speak to special issues in the mental health and addictions sectors, and key issues regarding children and youth.

Part 2: As a follow-up session, we will talk about the mental health system, including the Mental Health Act framework and community-based services, risk management considerations, privacy, and being an advocate in the system. We will discuss broadly to case scenarios in the mental health and addictions sector, involving the health system, housing and more.

About our speakers:

Angie Hamilton is an Executive Director and Co-Founder of Families for Addiction Recovery, a retired lawyer and parent of a child who struggles with addiction. She is a member of the Public Policy Committee of the Canadian Society of Addiction Medicine and a Board Member of The Ontario Family Caregivers’ Advisory Network. She was a member of the National Board of MADD Canada from 2014 to 2020 and the Chair of their Public Policy Committee.

Mary Jane Dykeman is a partner and co-founder at INQ Law in Toronto. She has acted as in-house legal counsel to two Toronto teaching hospitals. In her work, she regularly assists hospitals, long-term care and retirement homes, and community health care organizations in finding practical solutions to legal, clinical, risk and privacy matter – including mental health, consent, capacity and substitute decision-making, and difficult family issues. Since 2004, she has taught the mental health law course in the Osgood Professional Development Health Law LL.M.

Devan Nambiar, MSc. has been providing training and education on 2SLGBTQ and HIV for over 20 years to various communities and clinicians through his consultancy, GHIS. CA. He is currently serving on 4 Community Advisory Committees; CIHR CTN HIV Clinical Trials Network, CADTH, Ontario Caregivers Organization, and Virtual PrEP. Devan is the Manager of Capacity Building & Talent Development at Gay Men’s Sexual Health Alliance.
Speakers:
Ryan Wannamaker is a Registered Nurse working within the Day Health Program (DHP) at Casey House. He is responsible for providing holistic client-centered care within an interdisciplinary health care team, which is vital to improving the overall well-being of people living with HIV. In collaboration with DHP Physiotherapist, Ryan has also developed an exercise program designed to address this population’s complex health challenges, including aging with HIV, multimorbidity, and barriers to community exercise.
Shoshana Pellman has been an advocate for trans inclusion and care for over 15 years. Her story was published on Xtra Magazine and The Globe and Mail. She was interviewed on radio programs like Back in the Closet, The Current, and Sirius Radio 2011, and she is also a presenter for Healthcare Providers, Personal Support Workers, and Allied Healthcare Providers. Shoshana is passionate about patient-centred care for the trans population.
Sue/Suza (pronouns she/her/ hers) is a Primary Health Care Nurse Practitioner at St. Michael’s Hospital Academic Family Health Team since 1994. She is an experienced nurse with over 30 years of experience and has been a consultant trainer with Rainbow Health Ontario teaching about transgender and gender-expansive medical and surgical primary health care. Suza’s incredibly supportive work environment has provided the time and space needed to develop this clinical expertise. Her current clinical practice is almost exclusively devoted to the overall primary care needs of trans and gender-expansive individual, which she endeavors to provide from an anti-oppressive, harm reduction, sex-positive and health promotion perspective.

Together, we will explore the ABC’s of self-care, as well as, its five dimensions and suggestions to improve each dimension: (1) professional self-care, (2) spiritual self-care, (3) social self-care, (4), emotional self-care and (5) physical self-care. Strategies and tools presented are based on Motivational Interviewing skills, health coaching techniques and integrative health assessment quizzes.

Leah has seen first-hand the way caregiving affects one’s physical and emotional health, and she works with formal and informal caregivers on developing personal wellness plans that allow one to be in a better place to provide care to others. Leah is passionate about showing caregivers the power that relationships can have on the well-being of individuals and has worked with many nurses looking to decrease the stress involved in caring for sick patients. Leah is Past-President of the Canadian Holistic Nurses Association and a member of the Canadian Federation of Mental Health Nurses. She lives in Toronto and spends her time advocating for an integrative approach to healthcare. She speaks to a variety of audiences about the ways in which the body and mind are connected.

Michal Goldstein (RSW) is a Registered Social Worker working at Dynamic Health Clinic in Toronto where she sees adults for individual, couples and group counselling. She is also the founder of Creating Connections, a play-based therapy practice in Toronto, where she works with children suffering from mental health and behavioral challenges. She has over a decade of experience working with caregivers to support them in improving their ability to cope with the challenges inherent in caring for someone else. Michal has developed numerous workshops and support group programs utilizing knowledge of interpersonal neurobiology and mindfulness techniques to support individuals suffering from physical health, mental health, and parenting challenges. She is passionate about bringing evidence-based practice to the forefront of the clinical social work field. Michal knows both first-hand and from professional experience, the challenges that come with caring for someone with a physical and mental health illness and is grateful for the opportunity to bring more awareness, education and support to this community.

Shoshana Kulik (RSW) is a registered social worker at the Dynamic Health Clinic. She is caring and empathetic and has experience working at Circle of Care with the elderly. Shoshana has a strong awareness of the possible physical and emotional challenges that can arise from the responsibility of taking care of a loved one. With extensive mental health experience, she understands how the strains of caregiving can affect one’s mental health and that sharing ones’ struggles can give some relief from the stresses of continuous care for others. Shoshana utilizes the Strengths Based Model which capitalizes on a client’s strengths to foster growth. Her history of being a spiritual leader can help those who appreciate spirituality to find strength from the spiritual to help deal with challenging times.

Manage your inner critic through developing your soothing self.

In this session, we will learn how to utilize the mind-body connection to bring relaxation, self- compassion, and overall mindfulness to our experiences. There is significant research demonstrating the positive impact of practicing mindfulness techniques on one’s emotional health and ability to cope with ongoing stress. Together, we will explore the meaning of self-compassion and its three components: (1) notice your suffering, (2) treat yourself with kindness and (3) remembering that you are human. You will walk away with practical tips and strategies to incorporate self-compassion into your life and caregiving role.

Michal Goldstein (RSW) is a Registered Social Worker working at Dynamic Health Clinic in Toronto where she sees adults for individual, couples and group counselling. She is also the founder of Creating Connections, a play-based therapy practice in Toronto, where she works with children suffering from mental health and behavioral challenges. She has over a decade of experience working with caregivers to support them in improving their ability to cope with the challenges inherent in caring for someone else. Michal has developed numerous workshops and support group programs utilizing knowledge of interpersonal neurobiology and mindfulness techniques to support individuals suffering from physical health, mental health, and parenting challenges. She is passionate about bringing evidence-based practice to the forefront of the clinical social work field. Michal knows both first-hand and from professional experience, the challenges that come with caring for someone with a physical and mental health illness and is grateful for the opportunity to bring more awareness, education and support to this community.

Shoshana Kulik (RSW) is a registered social worker at the Dynamic Health Clinic. She is caring and empathetic and has experience working at Circle of Care with the elderly. Shoshana has a strong awareness of the possible physical and emotional challenges that can arise from the responsibility of taking care of a loved one. With extensive mental health experience, she understands how the strains of caregiving can affect one’s mental health and that sharing ones’ struggles can give some relief from the stresses of continuous care for others. Shoshana utilizes the Strengths Based Model which capitalizes on a client’s strengths to foster growth. Her history of being a spiritual leader can help those who appreciate spirituality to find strength from the spiritual to help deal with challenging times.
