The Ontario Caregiver Organization (OCO) exists to improve the lives of Ontario’s estimated 4 million caregivers; ordinary people who provide physical and/ or emotional support to a family member, partner, friend, or neighbour. OCO provides caregivers with one point of access to information, services and supports that empower and help enable caregivers to be successful in their role. OCO works in collaboration with caregivers, health care providers and other organizations to address the challenges that caregivers face so that all caregivers – regardless of age, condition, or geographic location – have access to the support they need.

We are recruiting for a Senior Communications Specialist. This is currently a vacant position.

This role will support the successful creation, development, and execution of communications strategies and associated materials that connect caregivers and other stakeholders to OCO’s programs, services and initiatives. You will work as part of the communications team and in close partnership with OCO’s Programs and Services Team.

The successful candidate will thrive in a fast-paced environment with competing demands, requiring a high level of initiative, efficiency, accuracy, and flexibility.

Key Responsibilities

Reporting to the Executive Lead, Communications, the Senior Communications Specialist will:

  • Develop and implement effective communication strategies that focus on the spread and scale OCO’s caregiver programs, services, and initiatives
  • Communicate information and calls to action to a variety of audiences to persuade, inspire, motivate, build support, educate, change behaviour, and/or promote understanding with others
  • Identify and frame key messages in partnership with subject matter experts for a range communication outcomes
  • Write engaging content for caregivers that includes but is not limited to newsletters, blogs, tipsheets etc.
  • Partner with external vendors including graphic design, web development and/or video and production teams, as required, to develop supporting visual/multimedia aids to support key communications (e.g., infographics, videos)Support the development and execution of public awareness campaigns
  • Manage OCO’s podcast production, identify themes and guests in collaboration with vendor and manage the distribution and promotion of episodes
  • Adapt and develop content for a variety of mediums in collaboration with subject matter experts and OCO team members
  • Support the Programs and Services team in the promotion of monthly webinars and other caregiver educational opportunities
  • Engage with caregivers to communicate and share their stories that demonstrate the impact of OCO’s programs, services and resources.
  • Support the development of OCO’s annual impact report
  • Accurately assess, prioritize, and manage multiple project demands
  • Monitor, measure and adapt the delivery of communications through different communications channels
  • Ongoing assessment of communications effectiveness using quantitative and qualitative measures
  • Support the development of strategies and content that help to ensure brand visibility among LLMs

Qualifications

  • Minimum 5 years’ experience working in a senior communications role
  • Experience working within the health care, social services, and/or non-profit sector and knowledge of the Ontario health care system and how it is evolving
  • Ability to develop and implement detailed organizational and initiative-level communications strategy with clear goals and timelines
  • Exceptional communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Experience with data and metrics analysis to inform strategy development and adaptation
  • Goal-oriented, with a track record of delivering measurable impact and results
  • Self-starter and innovative thinker with strong problem-solving skills
  • High comfort level and confidence working with a diverse range of communities, stakeholders, and decision-makers
  • Ability to navigate from strategic thinking to tactical implementation
  • Proven adaptability and positivity in a growing, fast-paced environments
  • Ability to foster relationships with professionalism, diplomacy and trust
  • Knowledge of caregiver needs, the role of caregivers in the health system and/or experience as a caregiver is an asset
  • Strong technical ability and proficiency in the use of computers and various software applications, in particular Microsoft Office, Dynamics 365, Survey Monkey, Zoom, ClickUp for project management, Cyberimpact,
  • Familiarity with AI platforms (ChatGPT, Copilot, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude)
  • Ability to speak and write in French is an asset
  • Experience supporting fundraising initiatives is an asset

Education

  • Completion of a relevant post-secondary degree in communications, public relations, English, journalism, or marketing
