The Royal’s family information and support events are intended for family members or caregivers of individuals with a mental health or substance use health issue. These events are an opportunity to learn from our experts\, find out about available resources\, and connect with others who share a similar experience. There is no cost to participate but registration is required. \nPresenters\nPhilip Grandia\, PhD\, CPsych\nClinical Psychologist\, The Royal \nTimothy Moran\, PhD\, MD\, FRCPC\nPsychiatrist\, The Royal \nOverview\nThis Community Mental Health Program family information and support session is open to family caregivers who reside in Ontario. \nThe family sessions are geared towards the family caregivers’ coping\, mental health and wellness within the context of supporting a loved one\, rather than focusing on the individual they care about. \nThis special session is an open discussion hosted by Dr. Timothy Moran\, psychiatrist\, and Dr. Philip Grandia\, psychologist\, of The Royal’s Community Mental Health Program. Dr. Moran and Dr. Grandia will provide a brief 10-minute presentation on their most frequent recommendations to family members and natural supports regarding how to best foster recovery for their loved one. The remainder of the session will be spent answering your questions related to how you can support the work of psychiatrists and psychologists providing care to your loved one. \nIn addition to a live question and answer period during the session\, Dr. Moran and Dr. Grandia welcome your questions in advance in preparation for the session. DESCRIPTION:Being a caregiver can come with some BIG feelings. It’s important you take care of yourself\, so you can take care of others. Join us for a workshop designed just for caregivers. The workshop will be facilitated by Marcia Buhler\, a Registered Psychologist. She will address the importance of self-care and strategies to identify compassion fatigue and burnout and their symptoms. She will also go over some research-based self-care strategies. This will be an interactive workshop with opportunities for discussion with the presenter and other attendees. \nAt the end of this session\, you will be able to:\n\nRecognize compassion fatigue\, burnout\, and their symptoms\nDiscuss evidence-based self-care strategies\nDevelop skills to cope with compassion fatigue and burnout\n\nAbout the Speaker:\n\nMarcia Buhler\, M.A.\, R.Psych.  – Marcia is a Registered Psychologist and is a Professional Practice Lead for Addiction and Mental Health\, Edmonton Zone\, AHS.  She has worked in various settings and has experience providing psychotherapy with children\, families\, and adults as well as facilitating groups.  She has been providing clinical education to staff for over 10 years with AHS as both a Clinical Education Specialist and also a Professional Practice Lead.\nAfter registering\, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting. \nFor questions call the Lung Line at 1-888-344-5864.

Many of us struggle with setting boundaries and knowing what’s appropriate. What makes it especially challenging is when we are feeling overcome by guilt\, worry\, and uncertainty. In this session\, Brynna Lemmex\, a social worker at The Royal\, will highlight the importance of establishing and maintaining boundaries as a way to maintain our own self-care. Specific strategies for setting boundaries and examples of how to use them will also be discussed.

There is no cost to participate but registration is required. \nPresenter\nHayley Masterson\, MSW\, RSW\nCBT therapist with Ontario Structured Psychotherapy (OSP) \nOverview\nWe want to connect most with loved ones when they are struggling with depression\, and yet in these moments it can feel like you are a world apart. This session will provide insight for family members about what is happening for your loved one on the inside and understand the changes you see on the outside. We’ll look at the cycle of the depression that may keep your loved one stuck. Caregivers and family members will leave with practical tips on how to meet their loved ones where they are and strategies for taking care of themselves. As a CBT therapist with the Royal\, Hayley Masterson will provide insights on Cognitive Behavioural Therapy as an evidence-based psychotherapy for treating clinical depression AND as a self-help tool for caregivers.
