SUMMARY:Financial Information for Caregivers by The Dementia Society of Ottawa & Renfrew County
DESCRIPTION:This online session will touch on a variety of financial topics pertinent to those who are fulfilling a caregiver role for a family member.  \nThe presentation is a discussion of a few medical/health tax credits\, including the disability tax credit and caregivers credit. Also a brief talk about managing finances in retirement\, trusts and their use\, and the power of attorney for financial matters.  \nYou will be presented with information that will give you a base from which you can refine your search to find complete answers relevant to your specific situation.  \nMeet our Speaker: Carol Skillen\, CPA  \nGraduated from St. Mary’s University (Halifax) with a Bachelor of Commerce and promptly started working as an auditor travelling across Canada and northern US for a couple of years.  \nGot tired of all the driving and landed a job as an auditor with Customs and Excise (which ended up being the Canada Revenue Agency after many growing pains). Stayed in audit for 25 years steadily working on larger and larger files and eventually became an audit team leader. For the last five years of my CRA life I was a manager in GST/HST Rulings. In 1991\, while with CRA I obtained my CGA (now CPA) designation.  \nA proud volunteer in some capacity\, mainly in sports coaching Paralympic athletes for about 12 years and then moved over to Special Olympics in 2001. Since retiring in March 2018 she have stepped up her volunteering and added helping out at various festivals around town and presenting these financial literacy sessions at various locations. She had presented around 20 different sessions over the last year and do them because she believes that : “everyone should possess the set of skills and knowledge that allows them to make informed and effective decisions with all of their financial resources”. Or at least have enough knowledge to know when they should ask more questions! “  \n Register Here:

SUMMARY:FREE OCO Webinar: Creating a Life you Love
DESCRIPTION:This workshop is about creating a life you love.\n\nAbout this Event\n\nWe all want to be happy. But we sometimes think of happiness as a thing that happens to us — something we have no control over. It is easy to link the idea of happiness with a situation. We might tell ourselves\, “If only things were different\, then I’d be happy.” But a big part of how happy we are depends on our mindset\, the habits we practice\, and the way we live each day. By learning the key ingredients of happiness\, we can use them to become happier.\n\nThis workshop will empower you with tools and techniques to elevate your emotional and mental wellbeing. The concepts you will learn are scientifically supported and clinically proven in real life through Dr. Natasha Sharma’s work as a therapist. This interactive workshop will educate\, engage\, and inspire you to take control of your life through the power of self-acceptance and compassion toward others. Benefits include reduced stress and anxiety\, better relationships\, increased self-esteem\, confidence\, productivity\, and feeling connected to something greater than yourself.\n\nThis presentation is available in English only. For any difficulty with registration or any other questions\, please contact us at info@ontariocaregiver.ca\n\nCette présentation sera diffusée en anglais seulement. SUMMARY:The SCALE Program: How Caregivers can Manage Sadness & Guilt
DESCRIPTION:The Support for Caregivers Awareness\, Learning\, Empowerment (SCALE) Program is series of free webinars for unpaid caregivers every Tuesday.\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this Event\n\n\nThe SCALE Program is series of free webinars for unpaid\, family caregivers every Tuesday beginning May 4th to June 29th\, 2021. Learn about the signs of guilt and the common themes often associated with guilt as a caregiver. This session will help you differentiate between two coping pathways: (1) thoughts and (2) emotion. Too often we face cognitive distortions\, the sneaky ways your mind convinces you of something that isn’t really true. Learn to identify and unpack these cognitive distortions that you may be having as a caregiver like “I should be able to care for her on my own at home” or “I’m a failure as a daughter.” We will question these negative thoughts and ask\, “is this 100% true?”. We will also explore the emotion of sadness and the triggers that cause it\, including the grieving process. \nRegister for exclusive access to this free webinar today. \nA zoom link to join the webinar live will be emailed to those who register. SUMMARY:A Moment for You: A Conversation Among Caregivers by March of Dimes Canada
DESCRIPTION:Let’s Celebrate National Family Caregiver Day!\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this Event\n\n\nFAMILY CAREGIVER EXPERIENCE\nA Moment for You: A Conversation Among Caregivers\n  \nREGISTRATION FOR THIS EVENT IS REQUIRED \nOnline info will be sent upon registration \nTuesday April 6\, 2021 \n2:00 PM to 3:30 PM \n  \nMembers of parliament have voted unanimously to adopt the first Tuesday in April as National Caregiver Day.  So\, this April 6\, we invite you to join us for a virtual conversation of the incredible unseen contribution caregivers bring to their care recipients\, communities and the economy as a whole. \nWe will also be recognizing the generous support of The Ontario Trillium Foundation\, our MPP supporters and caregivers everywhere. \nIt’s not easy. Being a caregiver is challenging\, rewarding\, scary\, depressing\, draining\, frustrating\, funny\, sad and one of the most genuine acts of kindness there is. No matter the emotions you feel during this process\, we want you to know that you’re not alone. \nWhether you’ve become a caregiver gradually or due to a crisis by choice or by default\, we understand the incredible challenges you face and the sacrifice you are making. \n\n\n\n\nDonna Thomson is the co-author of “The Unexpected Journey of Caring: The Transformation from Loved One to Caregiver” and the author of “The Four Walls of My Freedom: Lessons I’ve Learned From a Life of Caregiving.” Donna is a patient and family advisor on health research and policy and she teaches family caregivers in Canada how to advocate for care in hospitals and in the community at McMaster University and at Huddol.com. She blogs regularly at THE CAREGIVERS’ LIVING ROOM (www.donnathomson.com). \n  \n\n\n\nWith the support of the Ontario Trillium Foundation\, March of Dimes Canada’s After Stroke programs are bringing together caregivers\, caregiving experts\, and advocates to share their lived experiences and bright ideas. Help us transform the future of family caregiving.
