SUMMARY:Moving Past the Pandemic- Considerations for Autistic Children and their Caregivers Across Canada
DESCRIPTION:The COVID-19 pandemic has been difficult for many but recent research suggests that the mental health and overall wellbeing of families of children on the autism spectrum have been disproportionally impacted by multiple waves of lockdowns across Canada. In this panel with researchers Dr. Vivian Lee (Carleton University) and Jonathan Weiss (York University)\, as well as researcher-parent Dr. Janet McLaughlin (Wilfred Laurier)\, Matthew Ley (host) will discuss the current research on how autistic children and their families have been impacted by the pandemic but also ways in which families have been able to cope and thrive. Long term implications of the pandemic will be discussed as well as ways we can continue supporting caregivers and families as we move forward past the pandemic.

Please share this opportunity with your networks – all are welcome. \nWORKSHOP DESCRIPTION \nThe expectation that we can be immersed in suffering and loss daily and not be touched by it is as unrealistic as expecting to be able to walk through water without getting wet. Valerie has been a social worker for over 30 years working in a variety of settings including health care (palliative care\, chronic illness)\, child welfare\, and domestic violence. SUMMARY:Sometimes I'd Rather be Eating Gelato!: The Cost of Caring by Champlain Dementia Network
DESCRIPTION:The Champlain Dementia Network is pleased to present this online workshop\, by Valerie Spironello\, MSW\, RSW (choosewellness.ca)\, for both staff and caregivers. Please share this opportunity with your networks – all are welcome. \nWORKSHOP DESCRIPTION \nThe expectation that we can be immersed in suffering and loss daily and not be touched by it is as unrealistic as expecting to be able to walk through water without getting wet. (Remen\, 1996). Having worked in the field of child welfare\, domestic violence\, palliative care and now private practice\, Valerie knows first hand the ‘Cost of Caring’. \nUsing her ‘re-discovered’ sense of humour\, Valerie will share how Compassion Fatigue snuck up on her\, changed her and how she survived to tell her story. Valerie will share in a way that allows participants to reflect on how they are doing and to begin to explore what is needed to continue to be healthy while working in the field. Valerie has been a social worker for over 30 years working in a variety of settings including health care (palliative care\, chronic illness)\, child welfare\, and domestic violence. Valerie is an Assistant Professor (PT) with the Department of Family Medicine teaching in the Faculty of Health Sciences at McMaster University. She has provided workshops and presentations to service providers on a variety of topics such as compassion fatigue\, work/life balance\, mindfulness and end-of-life care. SUMMARY:Caregiving as Leadership by OFCAN
DESCRIPTION:Join the Circle to discuss the important and relevance of viewing Caregiving as Leadership. Learn\, share and connect with peers. \nAbout this event \nApril 12\, 2022\, 12:00 – 12:30 PM \nToday’s Leaders for Tomorrow’s Future podcast episode called “A Life of Caregiving is a Life in Leadership” Donna Thomson shares her experience with caregiving and how her journey has shaped her views on leadership. She speaks to the power of imagination\, bravery and asking for what you need when leading a life as a caregiver. She references the need to have both power and love for self\, for change and for the emergence of leadership. \nToday’s Leaders Circle is a safe space where people can come together to discuss a particular topic and continue the conversations that began from the podcast. The topic or its themes will be briefly introduced and attendees are invited to share their views and discuss the topic in more depth. \nCircle processes are based upon equality between participants and the principle of sharing power with each other instead of having power over one another. Given the time constraints\, the session will be facilitated to ensure its circle process is being followed. Please come ready to join respectfully and meaningfully. The sessions will not be recorded. By attending you are consenting to maintaining confidentially with what is shared within the circle. \nTentative Agenda: \nIntroductions\nSummary of caregiving themes and its connection to leadership frameworks and styles\nCircle sharing and breakouts\nSummary and Takeaways \nLearn more about facilitator and host\, Amanda Calzolaio: https://www.amandacalzolaio.com/

SUMMARY:OCO Webinar: Dancing with Dementia: Fostering Social Inclusion and Challenging Stigma
DESCRIPTION:Dance may not be the first thing that comes to mind when thinking about caring for someone living with dementia\, but the opportunity to dance has a lot to offer both the care recipient and the caregiver. Beyond the physical benefits of dance\, this webinar will explore the ways in which dance fosters social-inclusion for people living with dementia\, challenges stigma associated with dementia\, and supports the creation of dementia-friendly communities. The session will also offer ways in which dance may be accessed by people living with dementia and their caregivers\, and provide a brief demonstration of what an accessible dance opportunity can look and feel like.\n\nOur Speaker\nRachel Bar is the Director\, Research and Health at Canada’s National Ballet School (NBS). She completed her PhD in psychology at Ryerson University and her post-doctoral fellowship at Trent University’s Trent Centre for Aging & Society. As a dance artist\, she has been part of the multidisciplinary team that developed Baycrest and NBS’ approach to dance programming for older adults. As a researcher\, she has been involved in several projects investigating how and why older adults can benefit from accessible dance innovations\, including older adults living with Parkinson’s disease and dementia.\n\nOther Information\nPlease note that this presentation is available in English only.\nPour de l’information sur nos programmes et services en français\, visitez www.aidantsontario.ca our communiquez avec nous par courriel à info@ontariocaregiver.ca.\nFor any difficulty with registration or any other questions\, please contact us at info@ontariocaregiver.ca or call 1-888-877-1626 X 1011
