In collaboration with the Advocacy Centre for the Elderly\, join us to learn more about legal topics including:\n• Substitute Decision-Making for Property and Personal Care\n• Healthcare Consent and Advance Care Planning\n• General information on Henson Trusts\, and Wills \nOur speaker: Graham Webb\nGraham has been the Executive Director of ACE since October 2016. He graduated from Osgoode Hall Law School in 1983\, was called to the Bar of Ontario in 1985\, and obtained an LL.M. (Tax) from Osgoode Hall Law School in 2001. Before joining ACE in 1995\, Graham was engaged in private practice in Barrie\, Ontario\, in a general practice with emphasis on civil and criminal litigation. He has appeared in civil and criminal matters at all levels of courts and tribunals\, including the Supreme Court of Canada. Graham gives periodic legal education presentations on elder law issues to older adults and service providers\, including healthcare professionals and other lawyers. SUMMARY:How to provide support to people having surgery
DESCRIPTION:People undergoing surgery will need support for all stages of care. If you’re supporting someone who is having surgery\, it is important to know about preoperative patient care\, the surgery process\, and postoperative care for the prevention of surgical site infections. In partnership with Ontario Health\, this\nwebinar will provide caregivers with information\, resources\, and tools to understand:\n• The Ontario Health Quality Standard for Surgical Site Infections; what it is\, why it has been developed\, and how to use the patient guide to know what to ask for in your care.\n• The role that health care providers play in collaboration with patients and their caregivers to prevent surgical site infections for people having surgery that requires an incision (a cut through the skin).\n• Steps in determining the risk of getting a surgical site infection\, and who to contact if there are concerns about wound healing.\n• Empowering caregivers with questions to ask healthcare providers in advance of surgery. \nOur Speakers:\n• Megan Graham\, a former surgical patient\, who will share her lived experience\n• Dr. Claudia Malic\, current Vice-Chair of Quality and Patient Safety for the Department of Surgery\, University of Ottawa \nWho should attend? DESCRIPTION:Does your care recipient need help getting up from a chair or transitioning from place to place? Is this task new and difficult for you? Is this something that you may be struggling with? SUMMARY:Powerful Tools for Caregivers - Online
DESCRIPTION:Caring for a family member or friend with a chronic condition can be physically\, emotionally\, and financially draining. This self-care educational program for family caregivers builds the skills caregivers need to take better care of themselves as they provide care for others. Caregiver participants learn to minimize the potentially negative impacts of caregiving in a six-week program emphasizing self-care and empowerment. \nThis FREE workshop consists of six 90 minute class sessions held once a week and led by experienced class leaders.  Class participants are given The Caregiver Helpbook to accompany the class and provide additional caregiver resources. \n6 Classes with a direct focus:\nClass #1:  Taking Care of You \nClass #2:  Identifying and Reducing Personal Stress \nClass #3:  Communicating Feelings\, Needs\, and Concerns \nClass #4:  Communicating in Challenging Situations \nClass #5:  Learning From Our Emotions \nClass #6:  Mastering Caregiving Decisions \nWorkshops are currently being offered virtually through Zoom. A personal computer\, laptop\, tablet or mobile phone with Internet access is required to connect to the workshop. If you are using a computer that does not have a microphone built in\, then you will need a microphone or headset. A week prior to the workshop\, instructions will be sent on how to join the group. There is no cost to attend. Registration is required and space is limited.
