SUMMARY:Design for Dementia – Home Edition by The Dementia Society of Ottawa and Renfrew County
DESCRIPTION:For people living with dementia\, there is no “one size fits all” home environment. But with some simple accommodations\, your home can be optimized to be safer and more navigable for a person living with dementia\, to help maximize wellbeing\, dignity and aging in place.  \nHosted by The Dementia Society of Ottawa and Renfrew County\, Occupational Therapist and Director of Client Experience\, Dean Henderson will discuss how our homes are more than just physical spaces — they help to maximize independence\, autonomy and wellbeing. And they’re often the spaces where we feel most safe. However\, as dementia progresses\, individuals can experience impairments that affect their ability to do day-to-day activities\, and their safety. By understanding changes in the brain that people living with dementia may experience\, we can make simple design modifications to our homes to promote continued independence\, wellbeing\, and dignity.  \nParticipants of this webinar will learn:  \n\nHow our homes can support a person’s abilities to perform activities of daily living \nDesign principles for supporting dementia \nAbout brain impairments that can be associated with dementia and associated home design modifications \n\nRegister:

SUMMARY:Financial Information for Caregivers by The Dementia Society of Ottawa & Renfrew County
DESCRIPTION:This online session will touch on a variety of financial topics pertinent to those who are fulfilling a caregiver role for a family member.  \nThe presentation is a discussion of a few medical/health tax credits\, including the disability tax credit and caregivers credit. Also a brief talk about managing finances in retirement\, trusts and their use\, and the power of attorney for financial matters.  \nYou will be presented with information that will give you a base from which you can refine your search to find complete answers relevant to your specific situation.  \nMeet our Speaker: Carol Skillen\, CPA  \nGraduated from St. Mary’s University (Halifax) with a Bachelor of Commerce and promptly started working as an auditor travelling across Canada and northern US for a couple of years.  \nGot tired of all the driving and landed a job as an auditor with Customs and Excise (which ended up being the Canada Revenue Agency after many growing pains). Stayed in audit for 25 years steadily working on larger and larger files and eventually became an audit team leader. For the last five years of my CRA life I was a manager in GST/HST Rulings. In 1991\, while with CRA I obtained my CGA (now CPA) designation.  \nA proud volunteer in some capacity\, mainly in sports coaching Paralympic athletes for about 12 years and then moved over to Special Olympics in 2001. Since retiring in March 2018 she have stepped up her volunteering and added helping out at various festivals around town and presenting these financial literacy sessions at various locations. She had presented around 20 different sessions over the last year and do them because she believes that : “everyone should possess the set of skills and knowledge that allows them to make informed and effective decisions with all of their financial resources”. Or at least have enough knowledge to know when they should ask more questions! “  \n Register Here:
