SUMMARY:Sleep: The Caregiver's Elusive Friend
DESCRIPTION:The demands of caregiving often place tension on caregivers’ time\, meaning that important basic needs often fall by the wayside. Regardless of how long you’ve been a caregiver\, how many hours you spend supporting a loved one\, family member\, friend or neighbour\, you may experience challenges in getting the sleep you need due to the demands on your time\, or the stress that can accompany being a caregiver. The further good quality sleep is from your reach\, the more negative impacts you and your care recipient may experience. Yet\, quality of sleep is critical for our well-being\, and research does show that when caregivers take better care of themselves\, their care recipient does benefit. So how can we improve the quality of our sleep? We hope this webinar can help! \nThe Ontario Caregiver Organization is proud to present Sleep: The Caregiver’s Elusive Friend\, on September 24th at 12 p.m. (noon) EST. Join our conversation as we talk about “All Things Sleep” for caregivers\, and what this means in terms of sleep disorders\, medication dependence\, substance dependence and overall quality of life. \nThis session\, featuring Dr. David Gardner\, will explore sleep\, insomnia\, and the role of sleeping pills and non-pharmaceutical approaches to achieve a good night’s sleep. Dr. Gardner will delve into issues faced by caregivers that include: difficulties getting to sleep\, staying asleep\, sleeping pill risks\, effective alternatives\, and much more. \nDr. Gardner is a Pharmacist and Professor with the Department of Psychiatry at Dalhousie University with extensive research in deprescribing and sleep hygiene. With a unique perspective as a pharmacist and researcher; Dr. Gardner will share his knowledge on how caregivers can improve their sleep and well-being. There will be an opportunity to bring your own questions at the end of the webinar\, so be sure to register and join us live! \nDr. David Gardner’s research covers pharmacoepidemiology\, safe and effective use of psychotropic medications\, and program development and implementation in mental health and addictions services in primary care with a focus on pharmacists’ roles and services. With Dr. Andrea Murphy\, he has co-developed More Than Meds\, the Bloom Program\, Headstrong – Taking Things Head-On\, and Sleepwell. He has 100 peer reviewed publications and is the author of Antipsychotics and Their Side Effects. Recognitions include multiple teaching awards\, the 2012 Canadian Pharmacists Association Pharmacist of the Year award\, and in 2017 was identified as a CAMH Difference Maker in its 150 Leading Canadians for Mental Health campaign. SUMMARY:OCO Webinar: Q&A on Compassionate Communication and Self-Empathy for Caregivers
DESCRIPTION:This webinar is intended as a follow-up discussion on the topic of non-violent communication and managing conflict and challenging emotions that caregivers may experience. We were so impressed with the quantity and quality of your questions generated by two previous webinars by Marion Little and Mieko Ise\, that we believe they deserve answers.\n\nAs a reminder\, the two webinars explored self-empathy and non-violent communication as part of the caregiver role. Marion and Mieko presented perspectives and tools to translate and transform the caregiver experience by expanding strategies for empathy and compassionate communication toward self and others.\n\nTo get the most out of this Q&A session\, you can watch one or both of the previous webinars before joining on September 16th. The replay is also a great way to refresh your memory of the key concepts.\n\nWatch the replay for each webinar here:\n\nTransforming Caregiver Guilt & Resentment and Caregiving: https://vimeo.com/449766605\n\nConflict\, & Compassionate Communication:\nhttps://vimeo.com/450102162\n\nTo submit a question in advance\, please email us at info@ontariocaregiver.ca before September 4\, 2020\, and we will share them with Marion and Mieko to be included in the conversation. We hope you’ll join us!

SUMMARY:Webinar: Caregiving\, Conflict\, & Compassionate Communication
DESCRIPTION:This session invites participants to expand their perspectives and approaches to conflicts.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this Event\n\n\nMany kinds of conflict can arise in the context of caregiving: conflict with oneself\, siblings\, children\, the care recipient\, support staff\, and medical practitioners. It’s a normal and common part of relationships\, but it still catches us off guard and leaves us frustrated and confused. This session draws on Marshall Rosenberg’s compassionate Nonviolent Communication process (2015)\, inviting participants to expand their perspectives and approaches to conflict. It involves practicing self-empathy\, empathy towards others (even when we don’t feel like it)\, and honest assertiveness (even when it’s scary). We’ll explore ways to understand each other\, work and grow together\, even when we don’t agree. We’ll also look for strategies that better meet everyone’s needs. \nPlease bring a pen and paper to the webinar. Across the top of the page\, summarize a low-level instance of caregiver conflict or frustration with someone else that you wish you’d handled differently\, keep it to one sentence. This is for your own private practice. If there is time\, the presenter may invite examples\, but you do not have to share. \nMarion Little\, MA Dispute Resolution\, BA Linguistics\, CNVC Certified Trainer\, manages Community Services and Training for the John Howard Society of Peterborough\, including conflict resolution\, violence prevention\, and communication skills programs for adults & youth. Marion has taught undergraduate and graduate level courses in mediation and nonprofit management. She has also served as executive director for several social service agencies in BC. \nMieko Ise has been a caregiver to both her parents and in-laws for the past 10 years. It is Mieko’s intention to use her lived experiences to help other caregivers with their journeys and to be a catalyst for enhancing interactions between caregivers and healthcare professionals. Currently she is involved with the Ontario Caregiver Organization advising on the creation of new caregiver programs and services.

SUMMARY:Webinar: Transforming Caregiver Guilt & Resentment
DESCRIPTION:This session explores self-empathy as a way to transform caregiver guilt\, shame\, and resentment.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this Event\n\n\nThe story about “not enough” comes up when loved ones suffer and we cannot fix it\, or resources are limited\, or the care recipient unloads frustration and embarrassment on us\, or we’re burning out. It can seem unbearable and unsolvable. Drawing on Marshall Rosenberg’s compassionate Nonviolent Communication process (2015)\, we will investigate perspectives and tools to translate and transform these experiences. We’ll consider the impact of lost identities and hopes. Going beyond surface self-care efforts\, we’ll identify underlying needs and imagine strategies to meet those needs more deeply\, so we have the personal reserves to care for others. \nPlease bring a pen and paper to the webinar. Across the top of the page\, summarize a low-level instance of caregiver guilt or resentment or “not enough-ness” using one sentence. This is for your own private practice. If there is time\, the presenter may invite some examples\, but you do not have to share. \nMarion Little\, MA Dispute Resolution\, BA Linguistics\, CNVC Certified Trainer\, manages Community Services and Training for the John Howard Society of Peterborough\, including conflict resolution\, violence prevention\, and communication skills programs for adults & youth. SUMMARY:Do-It-Yourself Acupressure for Stress Relief: Tools for Caregiver Self-Care
DESCRIPTION:Caring for yourself is one of the most important—and one of the most often forgotten—things you can do as a caregiver. When your needs are taken care of\, the person you care for will benefit\, too. Regardless of age\, sex\, and race and ethnicity\, caregivers report problems attending to their own health and well-being while managing caregiving responsibilities. As caregivers experience varying levels of stress and burnout; self-care is central to creating balance in one’s daily life and caregiving journey. \nThe Ontario Caregiver Organization is proud to present Christine Fung; an Acupuncturist for over 20 years. This session will be focused on self-help acupressure techniques to help relieve stress and improve well-being. This session is great for all ages and those who are looking to get instant relief from stress\, anxiety and insomnia. \nChristine has spent over the past 10 years working as an acupuncturist helping patients to achieve their optimal wellness. She strongly believes that traditional acupuncture is an effective alternative medicine in conjunction with conventional medical treatments for ailments. \nChristine runs her own practice in Mississauga\, Acupuncture Shiatsu Clinic which has been established for over 20 years. She has received several awards throughout the years. She has received the Community Building Award presented by Bathurst-Finch Network in 2012\, Top Acupuncturist in Mississauga presented by Top Choice Awards in 2011 and 2013\, and Three Best Rated Acupuncturist in Mississauga in 2017\, 2018 and 2019.

SUMMARY:Cultivating Mindfulness for Well-being Among Caregivers
DESCRIPTION:Many caregivers frequently experience stress\, anxiety\, depression and loneliness. Mindfulness helps us stay in the present so that we can manage negative emotions and build emotional strength. This\, in turn\, allows us to care for our loved ones more effectively. \nThe Ontario Caregiver Organization is proud to present Dr. Alexandra Fiocco; Director of the Stress and Healthy Aging Research Laboratory at Ryerson University. In this presentation\, Dr. Fiocco will discuss the impact that chronic stress has on the mind and body. She will encourage attendees to identify the ingredients to their stress and how the experience of stress is manifested in the body. Dr. Fiocco will also provide an overview of mindfulness meditation\, an evidence-based stress-management tool that has been shown to decrease stress and support the wellbeing of family caregivers. Attendees will also be invited to engage in a short sitting practice before opening the floor for Q&A. \nBio: Dr. Alexandra Fiocco is an Associate Professor and Director of the Stress and Healthy Aging Research Laboratory at Ryerson University. Her research focuses on the impact of stress and lifestyle behaviours on emotional and cognitive wellbeing in later adulthood. She has been practicing mindfulness meditation for 10 years\, has engaged in mindfulness research for 6 years\, and is a Qualified Teacher of Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) as defined by the University of California San Diego Mindfulness-based Professional Training Institute.
