Peer Support

If you support someone in need and feel anxious and overwhelmed with your caregiving responsibilities, you’re not alone. We all face challenges on the caregiving journey.

As a caregiver, you take on many different tasks – providing emotional support, transportation, personal care, physical support, basic medical procedures, scheduling appointments, translating information, and managing financial and legal responsibilities. Tired, frustrated, anxious and overwhelmed, caregivers need support themselves.

Connect with others in a peer support group and share your caregiving experience, challenges and solutions. Call the Ontario Caregiver Helpline or use our Caregiving Information Search to find a peer support group near you.

Supporting Caregivers through Physical Distancing During COVID-19

Countries around the world are actively working to contain the COVID-19 pandemic. One strategy is physical distancing or avoiding interaction with others. While this strategy is necessary, it can contribute to feelings of isolation and loneliness. This is true for family caregivers and the person they support.

Please join this online caregiver support group created by the Ontario Caregiver Organization (OCO) to offset any support groups you may not be able to visit in your community during this time. Discussion will be driven by caregivers to discuss issues of highest importance to caregivers with facilitation by an OCO staff person on the following days and times:

Wednesdays 10:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.
Thursday 2:30 p.m. – 3:30 p.m.

We are here to help. Register today.

Once registered, you will receive more information about how you can join the group for these discussions either by phone or on your personal computer.

Huddol by the Canadian Caregiver Network is an online community for caregivers.

Big White Wall is an anonymous online mental health and well-being service offering community support, creative outlets, self-improvement tools and focused courses, free for all Ontarians.

1:1 Peer Support Program

In the next few months, the Ontario Caregiver Organization is launching a province-wide 1:1 Peer Support Program to connect caregivers with each other by telephone to receive support. As we prepare for the launch of this new program, we are recruiting volunteers to become Peer Mentors.

We are looking for volunteers who meet the following criteria:

  • A caregiver who is currently or has previously provided physical and/or emotional support to a family member, partner, friend or neighbour
  • Are at a point in your caregiving journey where you can provide support to others
  • Complete a criminal records check (CRC) before starting as a volunteer (OCO will reimburse all selected volunteers for expenses related to the CRC)
  • Participate in mandatory training and sign volunteer/confidentiality agreements
  • Agree to a one-year commitment to the program starting from the time you are matched
  • Must be 18 years of age or older

Complete our volunteer sign-up form and join us in providing support to Ontario’s caregivers.
