SUMMARY:Caring for a Loved One with Cancer: The Challenging Role of Caregivers - 4 part series\, in person in Ottawa
DESCRIPTION:Caring for a loved one with cancer is a challenging role that requires both physical and emotional support. Caregivers of cancer patients can be responsible for managing medications\, appointments\, and treatments while providing emotional support to the their loved one. This can lead to high levels of stress and exhaustion. \nThe role of a caregiver can also take a toll on mental health\, causing feelings of anxiety\, depression\, and isolation. Mental health professionals suggest that caregivers will benefit from self-care activities such as exercise\, socializing with friends\, or participating in hobbies they enjoy. \nCommunication is also important for caregivers to understand their loved one’s needs and limitations. For example\, speaking openly with healthcare providers will help caregivers to understand available resources such as counseling or respite care. \nWhenever possible\, caregivers need support from friends\, family members\, and support groups to help manage the emotional burden of caregiving. This can provide caregivers with a safe space to express their concerns and feelings. \nAs part of your supportive care team\, Ottawa Community Cancer Hub has partnered with Melina Ladouceur\, Registered Social Worker and Psychotherapist\, to offer a 4-part series to support caregivers to address their own needs.

SUMMARY:Four Healing Balms in End-of-Life Care: Expressive Arts at the Bedside
DESCRIPTION:Creative activities are not “extras.” They provide an essential foundation for life\, and in the process of sitting with a loved one who is dying\, and/or at memorial gatherings\, it is often songs\, stories\, and quiet reflections that carry powerful memories after the person’s death. Creative avenues such as music\, movement such as walking\, sharing stories\, and being still are essential in grief work and in self care for caregivers. \nDr. Elspeth MacEwan\, psychiatrist and expressive arts facilitator\, will lead this life-giving exploration through clinical examples\, guided conversations and easy expressive arts exercises. No artistic nor performing arts experience necessary; all are welcome at this engaging workshop.
