SUMMARY:Opportunity to share your experience with The Ontario Caregiver Organization
DESCRIPTION:Opportunity to share your experience with The Ontario Caregiver Organization  \n\nThe Ontario Caregiver Organization has been created to help improve the experience for caregivers who support a family member\, partner\, friend or neighbor with physical and/or mental health needs. \n\nWe are currently looking for caregivers to participate in one of three workshops in order to better understand the needs of Ontario Caregivers. Each workshop will include 8 – 10 caregivers\, as well as a facilitator. The workshops will take place in Toronto on April 9thand 10th. \n\nWorkshop A: April 9th (12:30 – 3:30 p.m.)  \nCaregivers who worry about their own mental health and the toll caregiving takes on them \n\nWorkshop B: April 10th (9 a.m. – noon)\nCaregivers who support a child or youth with mental health challenges \n\nWorkshop C: April 10th (1 – 4 p.m).  \nCaregivers who support an adult with mental health challenges \n\nThe focused conversation will explore opportunities to improve the caregiver experience and will help to inform the work of The Ontario Caregiver Organization. From the discussion\, the Ontario Caregiver Organization will create a caregiver “wish list” for each of the workshops. Each wish list will be shared publicly using video footage and photography from the workshop\, as well as using supporting visual and written materials that will help paint a fuller picture of the experience of caregivers. \n\nParticipants will have a little bit of prep work in advance. Caregivers will be reimbursed for travel\, accommodations\, incidentals (including respite or child care) and/or meals related to the workshop. Caregivers will also receive $50 for their time. \n\nThe wish list is a concept was created by a caregiver\, in partnership with The Change Foundation and we thank them for allowing us to continue this meaningful work. \nIf you are interested\, please contact Danielle Van Duzer at 519 546 0524 or \ndanielle.vanduzer@ontariocaregiver.ca by April 1\, 2019.

SUMMARY:Statement from Board Chair\, Janet Beed on Health System Transformation
DESCRIPTION:Across Ontario there are 3.3 million caregivers – ordinary people including children and youth who are caring for family members\, partners\, friends and neighbours who have physical and/or mental health needs. Ontario caregivers deliver more than 75% of all patient care\, including personal\, emotional and often medical care. \nCaregivers have told us they are struggling to cope and caregiver burn-out is on the rise. Caregivers want improved communication between health care providers\, better sharing of information with caregivers\, easier transitions across care settings and greater access to resources and education in the community\, regardless of where they live or diagnosis. Addressing these needs will help caregivers support the people they love and keep them as close to home as possible. \nThe proposed changes to Ontario’s health system\, as announced today\, have the potential to reduce bureaucracy\, foster seamless transitions in care\, enhance health care outcomes and improve the experience of Ontario caregivers and those for whom they care. The Ontario Caregiver Organization supports a health care system that supports caregivers. \nJanet Beed\, Board Chair

SUMMARY:Paediatric Mental Health Symposium - Feb. 10th
DESCRIPTION:The Ismaili Centre Toronto is hosting a symposium for parents and individuals with young family members to participate in a session on child and youth mental health on Sunday\, February 10th from 10 am to 3 pm at the Ismaili Centre Toronto\, 49 Wynford Drive\, North York. \nThe session will include world-renowned speakers who will be discussing the biological aspects of child and youth mental health\, as well as symptoms\, diagnoses\, and treatment approaches for common paediatric mental health conditions\, with a focus on taking the stigma out of talking about mental health. \nWe strongly encourage all parents and all individuals with young family members to participate in this session to learn more about this very important topic that impacts us all. According to Children’s Mental Health Ontario\, as many as 1/5 children and youth in Ontario will experience some form of mental health problem before adulthood\, and 5/6 of those children will not receive the treatment that they need. We know that 70% of mental health problems have their onset during childhood or adolescence\, and that Canada’s youth suicide rate is the third highest in the industrialized world. \nIn the face of statistics such as these\, the most important thing that parents and families can do is to arm themselves with the best information and education to enable them to identify children’s needs\, and to support and advocate for children experiencing mental health challenges. \nPlease share the link below with as many of your contacts as you think could benefit from this program. Tickets are only $15/person and a catered lunch will be included. Seats are limited\, so please be sure to register early. SUMMARY:Survey on promising practices of family caregiver engagement
DESCRIPTION:The Mental Health Commission of Canada’s Knowledge Exchange Centre (KEC) has been striving to promote the family caregiver’s voice and to enhance their recognition in Canada’s mental health and addiction (MHA) system. Working together with a health policy consulting group\, GreyLit as well as our Family Caregiver Advisory Group\, we are developing a “Best Advice Guide for Caregiver Engagement” to support organizations and service providers in developing strong caregiver engagement. \nThe Best Advice Guide seeks to synthesize the best available evidence on ways to support family caregiver engagement in Canada’s diverse MHA system. To ensure the guide remains as grounded\, relevant and useful as possible\, we are also seeking to highlight concrete examples of promising practices emerging from across Canada. \nAs a part of this effort we are reaching out to individuals like yourself to gain an understanding of the quality programs\, initiatives\, strategies or interventions that show potential and promise. \nWe invite you to answer the following questions to help us identify potential case studies to celebrated and shared through our Best Advice Guide. Your participation in this survey helps us celebrate and share innovative programs and policies that are currently and effectively engaging family caregivers.
